Everything you need to know about irc and spros

The International Rover Challenge (IRC), organized by the Space Robotics Society (SPROS), is one of the premier space robotics competitions in the Asia-Pacific region designed for university students. The event simulates a post-settlement Martian environment where teams must engineer "astronaut-assistive" rovers capable of performing complex exploration and maintenance tasks. The competition is structured in two stages: an online qualifier where teams submit a System Design and Development Review (SDDR), followed by the on-site finals held in a massive, specially curated 20,000-square-meter Mars-analogue arena known as Sproscape. Beyond technical engineering, IRC emphasizes project management and business strategy, evaluating teams on their ability to present a viable business and partnership plan alongside their rover's field performance.

Reconnaissance and Autonomous Delivery Operation (RADO):

RADO evaluates long-range navigation and autonomy, requiring the rover to locate, document, and deliver objects across the terrain. Reconnaissance involves object identification and localization, followed by autonomous delivery to designated locations, with scoring based on accuracy, efficiency, and level of autonomy.

Astrobiology Expedition (ABEx):

ABEx is a science mission where the rover acts as a mobile laboratory to assess site habitability. It documents locations using images and GPS data, collects a subsurface soil sample (≥10 cm), performs onboard environmental and life-detection analyses, and seals one uncontaminated sample for caching. Evaluation is based on scientific accuracy, sample quality, and data interpretation.

Instrument Deployment and Maintenance Operation (IDMO):

IDMO tests robotic manipulation and precision control, where the rover performs maintenance tasks such as operating switches, drawers, and connectors, and deploys components in specified positions. The mission emphasizes dexterity, accuracy, and effective visual feedback.

Project Implementation and Management Assessment

PIMA is a static assessment of the team’s engineering and project management approach, evaluating system design, planning, manufacturing, testing, and lessons learned through presentations and judge interactions.
